Common questions

Who set up Mavar and who runs its services?

Mavar was set up by a group of secular Jews, religious Jews and ex-Charedim. Its services are run by volunteers who have experience in many different areas and who are sensitive to the issues that Charedi Jews face.

Where are we based?

Mavar is able to support people all over the UK – we have volunteers in London, Manchester and Gateshead.

Is Mavar anti-religious or anti-charedi?

No. Mavar is based on the principle that people have a right to choose – and that includes the right to choose to be Charedi. We do not try to persuade anyone to be secular or to act in a particular way. The majority of our members would describe themselves as formerly frum, but we are also approached by people who wish to remain orthodox.  We support everyone entirely in accordance with their wishes in a non-judgemental way.

Does Mavar work with any organisations within the Charedi community?

No. In order to protect the confidentiality of callers, Mavar does not work with any organisations that are affiliated with the Charedi community.  All individuals are welcome to call, whether you were raised within Satmar, Belz, Vishnitz or unaffiliated, and whether you identify as apikoros or not.
