APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR 2020.
Careers LaunchPad helps people who have grown up in the haredi world, and are now keen to find employment in the secular world.
Over a 6 week period, you’ll have an opportunity to work in the sector of your choice – supported by a grant of up to £1,500. The full programme includes a six-week internship, ’employability skills’ workshops, career guidance, and optional IT training – all for free.
The workshops will help build confidence and skills and, most importantly, help you understand the secular workplace. They will be run in partnership with Work Avenue and Resource. In addition, Careers LaunchPad offers entry-level IT courses to those who need them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What sectors does this programme cover?
Whatever sector you’re interested in! We will reach into our extensive networks and work with a professional recruiter to help you find a placement in the area of work you’d like to explore.
What if I’m not sure about the sector I’d like to choose?
Mavar can help with this too. We have a number of careers and education advisers on hand that can help you work through your options. Just ask us!
What level of employment is this aimed at?
A complete range: from professions like law, accountancy and teaching, through to jobs in IT, the business sector and property management. You might even be interested in gardening or the art world – it’s up to each participant to decide!
How will I be paid?
Participants will be paid up to £1,500 at the end of the programme, on the assumption that they have attended all the workshops and reliably completed their 6 week internship. Participants can request travel expenses in advance, which will be deducted from the final grant.
What do the workshops cover?
You can put together your own ‘pick and mix’ programme of workshops including: understanding the secular world of work e.g. dress codes, gender relations, hierarchies, contracts, pay slips etc.; skills development e.g. how to brand yourself, cv writing, mock interviews; job-hunting and social media networking; and confidence building activities.
What about the IT training?
Optional IT courses will cover: MS Word (Basic or Intermediate levels), MS Excel (Basic or Intermediate levels) and MS Powerpoint (Basic).
What qualifications or experience do I need to apply?
Qualifications aren’t required (though they always help). Ideally, you will have some work experience, but it doesn’t need to be in the sector that you’re now exploring, nor does it need to be in the secular world. If you have never been employed before, please feel free to contact us and we’ll see what is possible. We will ask about your background on the application form and get to know you (if we don’t already) through an interview. All you really need is enthusiasm and a willingness to fully apply yourself to the programme.
Do I need to have had any previous contact with Mavar to apply?
Do I need to have left the ultra-orthodox community?
No, but you need to be interested in working outside the community. This programme will not suit individuals who are looking to work inside the community.
When does the programme run?
At any point during 2020 that suits you.
When should I apply?
We look forward to hearing from you.
